Goody Two Shoes - 1765 – A Trailblazer
“Goody Two Shoes” was a rags-to-riches fable published in the spring of 1765 in London by the John Newberry Company, author anonymous.
Given the times in the 18th century, becoming mothers and homemakers were the lives women found themselves in, caring for the family, cooking, cleaning, making clothes, while living as dependents. Married to a prosperous man gained her status, but not her freedom. The educational system systematically put forward the idea that women were incapable of education, born into a male-dominated patriarchal society fostering gender inequality.
Having taught herself how to read, Goody Two Shoes set out to instruct every child she met, eventually becoming President of the A, B, C College. Her life revolved around serving others and doing good deeds. By now, the neighbors believed in her goodness, and she gained the respect of everyone.
But one man took more notice of her virtues, Sir Charles Jones, a widower who proposed marriage. Sir Charles Jones and Goody Two Shoes, now Lady Jones, lived happily ever after. She continued to serve the poor until her death, the greatest tragedy the townsfolks had experienced.
“Goody Two Shoes” was a fable written over two-hundred fifty years ago, tongue-in-cheek, for the success of Goody Two Shoes was a preposterous tale when it was written.
But she trusted herself. She trusted the process. And when faced with a challenge, she asked herself: What should I do? What can I do? What will I do?
Life Lesson:
What should I do? What can I do? What will I do?
Trust yourself. You’ve got this!
